About Kahlea & EmpressThings

My journey into rock climbing began as a bold leap of faith on my 35th birthday. In April 2018, I booked an Airbnb Experience at Brooklyn Boulders in the West Loop of Chicago. What was meant to be a one-time adventure turned into a life-changing passion. Within weeks, I was back for the Intro to Climbing class, learning the fundamentals of bouldering. Not long after, I took the Learn the Ropes class to become top rope certified. Climbing had captured my heart, and I knew I wanted to pursue it to the fullest.
After about a year of consistent climbing and watching others lead at the gym, I was inspired to push my boundaries. I became lead climb certified, embracing the thrill and challenge of navigating more complex routes. This spirit of adventure and growth also led me to a pivotal career change. After working for nine years as an ESL Senior Coach, I made the bold decision to leave my job and immerse myself in the climbing community. I joined EPIC Climbing and Fitness, gaining firsthand experience and deeper insight into the world of climbing.
However, my journey hasn't been without challenges. In 2024, I faced a significant setback when I suffered a severe hip injury that threatened my ability to continue climbing. The pain was so debilitating that I questioned if I would ever climb again. It was a humbling experience that tested my resolve and passion for the sport. Through perseverance, rehabilitation, and unwavering determination, I gradually worked my way back onto the climbing wall. This experience taught me resilience and the importance of adaptive thinking β lessons that have deeply shaped my approach to climbing and life.
Today, I am an active rock climber actively pursuing certification as a Single Pitch Instructor (SPI), committed to putting in the work to earn this credential. I am also honored to serve on the board of Muir Valley in Kentucky as Financial Secretary, contributing to the stewardship and growth of a beloved climbing community.
Competitions and Personal Growth
I ventured into climbing competitions, bringing with me the competitive spirit honed from my background in music competitions. Competitions push me to new heights, challenging me to overcome my limits. The rush I get from competing fuels my drive to continuously improve and grow in this sport.
Vision for the Future
My passion for climbing extends beyond personal achievement. I aspire to travel the world, exploring diverse climbing terrains while focusing on outdoor and sport climbing. My ultimate goal is to obtain my certification in both single and multi-pitch climbing, empowering me to lead others safely in outdoor climbing experiences.
Through my journey, I aim to inspire others within my community β particularly underrepresented groups β to explore the benefits of climbing. I believe that climbing is an incredibly positive and transformative sport that everyone, regardless of background, should have the opportunity to experience.
Community Involvement and Impact
I am deeply committed to the climbing community. During my time at EPIC Climbing and Fitness, I engaged with climbers of all ages, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. I also actively participated in SheSends and other community initiatives in Indianapolis, encouraging more women and people of color to participate in climbing.
My current role as Financial Secretary on the Muir Valley board in Kentucky allows me to give back to the climbing community by helping preserve and enhance a treasured outdoor climbing area. I am passionate about creating opportunities for others to experience the joy and growth that climbing has given me.
